He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. (Proverbs 13:3 KJV)
Life and death is in the power of the tongue. It is a small part of the body, yet it is the strongest muscle and is the hardest to control. To illustrate, a big sea vessel can be controlled by a small rudder which incidentally has the shape of a tongue. A horse can be directed by small bits attached to its mouth with just a small pull of the bridle.
Statistics show that about 30,000 words on the average are spoken by an individual daily. That could be the reason many get into trouble because of what they say. Lying, deceiving, flattering, seducing, slandering, gossiping and cursing are the things we have to avoid. It is best to be silent than to say a thousand words without sense. Less talk less mistake, so they say. The wise ponders first what to say. His words are based on truth, gives comfort, can persuade and are able to dissipate anger or wrath. Psst… can I tell you something? It’s no secret. It’s about the love of Christ who saves and the ark of salvation which is the Most Holy Church! Let us speak of life instead of death!
