But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42 CEV)
Jesus went to the house of Martha and her sister Mary. Martha was busy preparing food and entertaining the guests, while Mary stayed and sat at the feet of Christ, listening and learning from Him. Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. Jesus answered, “Martha, you are anxious of so many things. Mary has chosen what is best. That which is necessary.” So what is the only one thing that is necessary? For many, it is the need to be rich and famous. They are the ones who are busy pursuing things which satisfy their human bodies but neglecting the need of their soul. Even if you have everything in this world but you lack what is the only one thing needed, you have nothing. Mary chose that one thing: to be with Christ, to stay with Him. She nourished her soul with the pure milk of God’s words. She chose to rest in Christ rather than be very busy in the cares of this world. The only one thing necessary is Christ. He is the source of everything we need. In Him, we have rest, peace and happiness which abide, compared to the satisfaction that the world offers which lasts only for a little while. Are you a Martha or a Mary? What are you busy about, the cares of the world or of your soul? Choose the best part!
