Happy are those who are concerned for the poor; the LORD will help them when they are in trouble. (Psalms 41:1 GNB)
Pure religion is characterized by helping the orphans and the widows. Thus, the true Church can be amply called “Bethesda” which means House of Mercy. Jesus showed mercy when He opened the eyes of the blind, healed the sick, delivered the captives and freed the oppressed. His mercy showed us the way to His kingdom. Apostle Peter had mercy to a crippled beggar. He said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I have I will give, in the name of Jesus of Nazareth, walk.” Note first that we cannot give what we do not have. Give freely what we have. It is more blessed to give than to receive because the poor cannot reciprocate; it is God who will return the favor for what you have done. Second, greater blessing do we give to the needy when we provide them with spiritual than physical or material help. Be kind to the poor, not by words but by deeds. Let them feel God’s love through you and praise God for His mercy.
