But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. (Luke 6:35 NKJV)
You reap what you sow. Love begets love. It is true that eventually, you will enjoy the fruits of the good things you did for others. But what if your good deeds get nothing in return, will you still continue to do good things to others? What if your enemy who harmed you and caused you pain needs help, would you be willing to lend a hand? Our Lord Christ Jesus once said, “If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” To be perfect like our Father, we should learn to love like our Father. He managed to manifest Himself in the flesh and sacrifice Himself by dying on the cross to save His enemies – us sinners. Because of the greatness of His love, we learned to love Him. There is no other way to be perfect but to live in love. Yes, we should even love our enemies. Let us serve them without expecting anything good in return. By that, the day will come when, despite all the harm and hate they have towards you, because of your undying love like the Father’s, they will learn to repent their sins and start treating you the way you deserve.
