The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death. (Proverbs 13:14 NIV)
Solomon is the son of David. Solomon was known to be the wisest during his time. But take note of what he is saying here. He is telling us that we have to listen to wise people to be wise. Of course his wisdom came from God but he also admits that he was taught by his father who prepared him to be king. David learned the hard way. He graduated from the school of hard knocks. We may say he is street smart. He was with God in the field as His shepherd and taught him how to be one. He wrestles with the beasts in the field to care for his flocks. Solomon learned from his father David. He did not have to go through hard times like his father. He was wise indeed. To be wise is to have a teachable spirit. Do not be proud because of what you know, be humble instead. Know that you do not know everything. Accept corrections by admitting your mistakes and do as you are corrected. Do not be stubborn, foolish and hard headed. Those who are willing to listen are the ones who can be developed. Seek to be with good influences, people from whom you can learn from. Two is better than one, you can learn from each other and work with each other to achieve and do more. What you have learned, you must give to others. Impart the wisdom you gain for the benefit of others. Parents must teach their children, ministers must teach the brethren, and the brethren must impart the knowledge to the lost souls that they may be saved. We are a wise nation with divine wisdom which leads to life. Again I advise you, be wise and save a soul. You will have greater knowledge of the love of God, and of how much He loves you. He spread his arms on the cross—that is how much He loves you.
